A Massive Object in the Core of NGC 5055 ?

چکیده

In a global kinematical study of NGC 5055 using high resolution Fabry-Perot interferometry, intriguing spectral line prooles have been observed in the center of the galaxy. These prooles seem to indicate a rapidly rotating disk with a radius near 365 pc and tilted 50 deg with respect to the major axis of the galaxy. In the hypothesis of a massive dark object, a naive keplerian estimate gives a mass between 10 7:2 to 10 7:5 M. Unfortunately the limited spectral domain of the Fabry-Perot leaves some ambiguity on the exact movement and velocity of this H emission. 2-D spectroscopy with a larger spectral range (eg.: TIGRE or low resolution Fabry-Perot) is thus required.

THE ROLE OF STARS IN THE ENERGETICS OF LINERs

Imaging studies have shown that ∼ 25% of LINER galaxies display a compact nuclear UV source. I compare the HST ultraviolet (1150–3200 Å) spectra that are now available for seven such “UVbright” LINERs. The spectra of NGC 404, NGC 4569, and NGC 5055 show clear absorption-line signatures of massive stars, indicating a stellar origin for the UV continuum. Similar features are probably present in N...

Detection of spiral magnetic fields in two flocculent galaxies

According to the classical axisymmetric dynamo concept, differentially rotating galaxies which lack organized optical spiral patterns and density wave flows should still have spiral magnetic fields with a substantial radial component. To check this hypothesis we observed two flocculent spirals, NGC 3521 and NGC 5055, in the radio continuum (total power and polarization) at 10.55 GHz with a reso...

Probing the formation of intermediate- to high-mass stars in protoclusters

We present the results of dust continuum and molecular line observations of two massive cluster-forming clumps, NGC 2264-C and NGC 2264-D, including extensive mapping performed with the MAMBO bolometer array and the HERA heterodyne array on the IRAM 30m telescope. Both NGC 2264 clumps are located in the Mon OB1 giant molecular cloud complex, adjacent to one another. Twelve and fifteen compact m...
